France protests: Tensions rise as arrests mount in Paris and other cities

ici.radio-canada.ca (French) —

France saw dozens of arrests Saturday as tensions rose during initial protests in Paris and other cities, called by former "yellow vest" activists and youth groups united in anger over rising costs. Authorities reported 140 actions with 32,800 participants in the provinces and 166 arrests nationwide by midday, including about 60 in Paris. Police used tear gas near Place de la République, and incidents occurred in Rouen, Marseille, and Lyon. The mobilization comes six months before the presidential election, amid fuel price spikes and falling purchasing power. Unions have called for separate strikes on November 5, and authorities expect up to 190,000 protesters nationwide.
