Housing protesters camp overnight in Lisbon and Porto before assembly

sapo.pt (Portuguese) —

Hundreds of people spent the night in Lisbon's Rossio square and Porto's D. João I square protesting the rising cost of living, ahead of a housing assembly planned for today. In Lisbon, protesters formed a human chain around tents to prevent removal, singing protest songs against Prime Minister Montenegro and denouncing policies favoring the wealthy and real estate funds. In Porto, around 300 demonstrators remained encamped, with police leaving the square at 2 a.m. The Casa para Viver movement organizes today's Popular Housing Assembly at Largo de São Domingos. Porto organizers distributed helmets and elbow pads in case authorities returned, stating violence would not stop them.
