CGTP promises "great moment of struggle" at cost-of-living protests in Lisbon, Porto, and Coimbra
Portugal's largest trade union federation, CGTP, expects its demonstrations against the rising cost of living to be a "great moment of struggle" and warns political parties it will hold accountable those who allow current difficulties to persist. The protests, scheduled for Saturday in Lisbon, Porto, and Coimbra, aim to give a voice to workers, retirees, and young people affected by sharp increases in housing, fuel, and food prices, as well as deteriorating public services. CGTP leader Tiago Oliveira stated the demonstrations are a response to current government policies and announced strike notices to enable participation across several sectors. Oliveira specifically criticized the PS party for announcing its voting intention on the 2027 State Budget before seeing the proposal, accusing it of sitting on the fence while millions suffer from low wages and high costs. The decentralized rallies will follow different routes in each city, with Porto and Coimbra starting at 10:30 and Lisbon at 14:30.
