France braces for October 17 protests as minister warns of blockades
French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez expects hundreds of spontaneous gatherings, demonstrations, and blockades across France on Saturday, October 17, during a mobilization against the high cost of living, with about 500 actions planned and over 90 demonstrations being organized. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has convened an interministerial crisis cell. Nuñez anticipates potential overflow in Paris and major cities, warning that blockades of essential infrastructure will not be tolerated. Paris police prefect Patrice Faure announced disagreement with organizers over the march route, refusing a finale in central Paris. The mobilization has grown from social media calls to revive the "gilets jaunes" movement, joined by youth organizations, climate activists, farmers, and unions including the CGT. Nuñez confirmed that stun grenades may be used, following their suspension after a teenager lost a hand during recent school protests.
