France Riots Over Living Costs: 1,200 Arrested as Protests Turn Violent
Nationwide protests in France over rising living costs and government policies have escalated into riots, resulting in over 1,200 arrests, arson, and widespread looting. Clashes with police occurred in Paris and other cities, prompting a stern warning from President Emmanuel Macron. The protests, which began with student demonstrations, drew an estimated 550,000 participants, including workers, farmers, and Yellow Vest sympathizers. Rioters threw explosives at police, who responded with tear gas and water cannons. Property damage included torched vehicles, ransacked stores, and attacks on municipal buildings in Bordeaux, Limoges, and Marseille. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez reported 60 police officers injured, while a protester lost a hand in Saint-Etienne. Rioters also threatened to storm Macron's official residence. The government has vowed strong legal action against those involved in the violence.
