French protests over living costs turn violent in Paris, Marseille, and Lyon
Hundreds of thousands of people in France protested on Saturday against high living costs and education system grievances, leading to violent clashes with police in multiple cities, including Paris, Marseille, and Lyon. Police used tear gas and made approximately 270 arrests. Around 20 people were arrested for throwing objects at the CNews television station, owned by right-wing billionaire Vincent Bollore. Nationwide, up to 800,000 people participated, with protests strengthened by students, unions, and farmers. The Interior Ministry reported looting attempts, attacks on police, and arson. The protests come nearly seven months before the presidential election, with the government seeking to prevent a broader protest wave. In Paris, police used tear gas and water cannons, while masked individuals briefly entered Marseille's city hall. President Emmanuel Macron called for peaceful protests, and Interior Minister Laurent Nunez did not rule out using stun grenades.
