Portugal housing and cost-of-living protests swell in Porto, Coimbra, and Lisbon
National housing and cost-of-living protests escalated across Portugal on Saturday, with marches held in Porto, Coimbra, and Lisbon, demanding higher wages and better public services. The CGTP union led morning rallies in Porto and Coimbra, while the Intersindical organized an afternoon march in Lisbon. CGTP leader Tiago Oliveira said protests target the "brutal increase" in housing, fuel, and food prices, urging citizens to fight current policies. The protests follow a police crackdown last week in Porto, prompting an internal investigation. Prime Minister Luís Montenegro denied calling protesters selfish, while the Housing Movement distanced itself from threats against him. Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas called the cause just but urged legal conduct.
