France braces for nationwide protests over cost of living
Between 30,000 and 60,000 protesters are expected in Paris and up to 170,000 nationwide on Saturday, as diverse groups including former "gilets jaunes," students, climate activists, and farmers unite against the high cost of living. Authorities reported 61 arrests in Paris by 11am, including 21 at the CNews headquarters where windows were broken. Police dispersed two unauthorized marches, while in Lyon and Marseille, tear gas was used and a police station was targeted with smoke bombs and attempted arson. Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot reported roadblocks and closures across France, including on the Rennes ring road and a filter barrier in Lille. President Emmanuel Macron called for calm, while a poll shows 69% of French people support the mobilization.
