French Political Leaders Clash Over October 17 Protests
French political leaders clashed Saturday over protests marred by violence and looting in Paris, Lyon, and Lille. Marine Le Pen accused far-left lawmakers of legitimizing violence, while Jean-Luc Mélenchon condemned the police strategy as "lamentable." Le Pen said social demands were "taken hostage by the far left," citing Mélenchon's deputies' rhetoric. Mélenchon countered that authorities "organized the disorder," accusing the Paris police prefect of provoking confrontation. Édouard Philippe demanded firmness against "casseurs," while Marine Tondelier urged a review of crowd-control doctrine. The protests drew tens of thousands of mostly peaceful demonstrators, according to Mélenchon. He criticized continuous media coverage of violent images, claiming calm prevailed in many cities. Jordan Bardella and Éric Ciotti also condemned the unrest, with Ciotti citing "red fascism" in the streets.
