Fire Destroys Limoges Town Hall, Clock Tower Collapses
The municipal building of Limoges, a 19th-century structure, was largely destroyed by a fire set by radical individuals at the end of a protest against the high cost of living, according to officials. The fire caused severe damage, including the collapse of the clock tower. Prefect Maurice Barate called the event a "catastrophe for heritage" and a deliberate act of vandalism, noting that two-thirds of the facade is gone and the roof collapsed. Mayor Guillaume Guérin said the fire continues to spread, destroying the wedding and registry halls, though no injuries were reported. The fire was started while people were inside the building, including local administrators and municipal police, but all were evacuated safely. Firefighters are battling the intense flames, which are being fueled by the wind.
