French protests unite students and Yellow Vests over living costs
Tens of thousands are expected to demonstrate across France on Saturday as students, trade unionists, and Yellow Vest activists unite against high living costs and poor school conditions. Authorities estimate between 70,000 and 140,000 participants. The protests follow months of student action over teacher absences and facilities, which expanded into a nationwide movement against social inequality. Talks with Education Minister Édouard Geffray failed, prompting unions to seek direct engagement with Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu's office. Roadblocks, railway station blockades, and toll booth disruptions are anticipated, echoing the 2018-2019 Yellow Vest tactics. Lecornu called the protests among the most violent in decades, with over 900 police injured, while President Macron urged calm and opposition leaders voiced concern or support.
