Italy protests over living costs turn violent in Milan, Turin, and Bologna
Italy faced protests over high living costs and low wages, with violent clashes in Milan and tensions in Turin and Bologna, as a general strike was announced. In Milan's Duomo square, police used tear gas against protesters who erected barricades and threw firecrackers, resulting in numerous injuries and about fifty arrests. Bologna saw clashes near its train station, while Turin experienced tensions during a demonstration against Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The CGIL union called a general strike for November 20, coinciding with a European student strike. Meloni condemned the violence, stating that protesting is a right but burning cities is not, and urged opposition leaders to unequivocally reject the unrest.
