Limoges city hall gutted by fire after protest violence

lesoir.be (French) —

The Limoges city hall was severely damaged by a fire set by radical individuals on Saturday following a protest, with the building largely destroyed and its roof collapsed. No injuries have been reported. The 19th-century building, inaugurated in 1883, was targeted after clashes between hundreds of "radicalized and extremely violent" individuals and police, who faced projectiles near a highway. The prefect called it a "patrimonial catastrophe" and an intentional act by "crackers, not protesters." Around 5,000 people participated in the national mobilization against the high cost of living. The fire spread to the prefecture, and shops were looted, while six police vehicles were burned or damaged.
