Arson Destroys Limoges' 143-Year-Old City Hall
A fire set by masked demonstrators has largely destroyed the 143-year-old city hall in Limoges, France, with the roof collapsing and two-thirds of the exterior gone, according to officials. The prefect called the arson a deliberate act by hooligans and a catastrophe for cultural heritage. The unrest occurred during nationwide demonstrations in France. Witnesses reported the group set a police car ablaze outside before breaking in and starting the fire, which firefighters battled late Saturday. Around 1,200 people were arrested and 150 police injured nationwide, with looting also reported in Limoges. In Paris, Norwegian students Sara Frøyland and Caroline Torkildsen were trapped in a shop for 90 minutes as tear gas spread outside, highlighting the broader impact of the protests on civilians.
