Porto housing protesters stay overnight after police charge, but skip tents

rtp.pt (Portuguese) —

Protesters for housing rights in Porto voted to remain overnight in Praça D. João I following a police charge, but decided against setting up tents. Around 2,500 people attended the protest on Thursday. The demonstration followed a police intervention that left 39 protesters injured, two seriously, according to organizers, and one officer hurt, per the PSP. Protesters later marched to Avenida dos Aliados, and police removed tents installed overnight after the mayor vowed to be "absolutely relentless" against them. The movement demands rent law repeal, an end to evictions and property purchases by vulture funds, more public housing, and rent caps. Organizers condemn the police action as "extreme, disproportionate and unjustified," while authorities call it "proportional" and "legitimate."
