1,500 Shops Looted Across France as Riots Spread
Around 1,500 shops across France have been hit by looting and destruction during nationwide riots, according to the French retail federation, with damages estimated at several billion kroner. Protesters are expressing anger over high living costs and a lack of resources in schools. Looters have smashed windows and stolen luxury goods, while several town halls and shops have been set on fire. The unrest began with student strikes over teacher shortages and poor facilities. The demonstrations culminated on October 17, drawing up to 800,000 people. Police have arrested over 1,800 people, while more than 500 officers and firefighters have been injured. President Emmanuel Macron has vowed to prosecute those responsible for the violence.
