Hundreds protest housing costs in Porto
Hundreds of people gathered in Porto's Praça da Batalha on Saturday for a demonstration against housing costs, organized by a movement that has held protests and camps in the city center. The "march for the right to a roof," starting at 4 p.m., will proceed to Praça D. João I, where the Acampada movement has staged actions since October 10. Around 300 people were present, with organizers distributing a "Manifestant's Guide" advising on police encounters and detention limits. The protests, which began in Porto on October 10 and spread to Lisbon, demand measures to address the housing crisis, price controls, and taxes on bank windfall profits. A police charge on October 15 injured 39 people, and Lisbon authorities detained 55 protesters on Tuesday.
