Portuguese police bar overnight tents in Lisbon's Rossio square
Portugal's PSP police announced Saturday it will not allow housing protesters' tents to remain overnight in Lisbon's Rossio square, warning it will intervene if the illegal encampment persists. The police stated it will maintain last week's procedures, prioritizing dialogue while continuing dynamic risk assessments. PSP emphasized its actions follow constitutional and legal principles of legality, proportionality, adequacy, and necessity, respecting protest rights within legal limits. Thousands had marched from Marquês de Pombal to Rossio, where the Acampada de Lisboa has gathered daily since last Saturday. Similar protests occurred in Porto and other cities, demanding housing measures. Earlier this month, police removed dozens of tents and detained 55 protesters, following a violent police charge in Porto that injured 39 people.
