France protests: 1,300 arrests as unrest spreads across Europe

deutschlandfunk.de (German) —

More than 1,300 people were arrested during protests in France yesterday, with Interior Minister Nuñez reporting that demonstrations initially proceeded peacefully before police faced extreme violence. Two people were seriously injured in Clermont-Ferrand and Toulouse, and property damage and looting occurred, though less severe than last week. Authorities had imposed restrictions and banned many rallies ahead of the protest weekend, deploying 70,000 security forces. The interior ministry reported over 400,000 participants, while the CGT union counted nearly 800,000. The ongoing protests focus on high living costs and education policy. Similar demonstrations occurred in Italy, Portugal, Spain, and Albania, including stone-throwing in Tirana and clashes in Milan, Bologna, Turin, and Rome. Brussels police used tear gas, Lisbon cleared a housing protest camp, and Barcelona saw around 100 arrests.
