French police detained about a thousand people during protests in Paris and other cities on Saturday, following clashes with demonstrators. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez reported an "extremely high level of violence" from far-left extremists. Special police units used tear gas in Paris, Marseille, Lyon, Bordeaux, Lille, Toulouse, Montpellier, and Nantes. Two people were seriously injured, including a man in Toulouse who reportedly lost fingers. Authorities deployed 70,000 security personnel nationwide for the marches against the rising cost of living. Estimates of turnout ranged from 410,000 to 800,000 participants nationwide, with 110,000 to 250,000 in Paris.
