Barcelona protests: Around 100 arrested after riots and looting in city center
Around 100 people were arrested in Barcelona after hundreds of young people rioted, looted shops, and set fire to containers in the city center. The protests followed a social media call, though their exact aim remained unclear. The violence began around 6 p.m. and continued into the night, with rioters damaging street furniture, bicycles, and motorcycles. About a quarter of those arrested were minors, and over 220 police officers were deployed to control the situation. Catalan President Salvador Illa condemned the violence, saying protest is a democratic right but attacks and vandalism are not. Barcelona's mayor promised consequences for the perpetrators, while similar protests with clashes also occurred in French and Italian cities.
