French government unveils measures to end high school student protests
The French government will announce measures on Monday, October 26, to address high school student protests over poor facilities, teacher shortages, and overcrowded classes. The announcement follows meetings with student organizations after more than a month of mobilization. The government plans to reduce class sizes, though no specific threshold has been set, and will address the planned elimination of 1,588 teaching posts in the 2027 budget. Education Minister Édouard Geffray previously announced 3,000 replacement teachers for struggling schools, a move critics called a publicity stunt. The government will not abolish the Parcoursup university admissions platform, which protesters demand, but will add BTS places in high-demand fields like industry. It will also address school building conditions and student representation, while student groups call for further protests this Saturday.
