Barcelona Unrest: Over 100 Arrested in Looting and Arson Protests
Around 100 people were arrested in central Barcelona following protests that escalated into looting and arson, with just over half of those detained being minors. The unrest continued late into the night. The protest was reportedly a response to demonstrations in France, with youths mobilized via social media under the slogan 'institut indignats' (outraged high schools). Rioters damaged street furniture, looted shops, and set fires at roughly 30 locations, prompting over 220 police officers to respond. Catalan regional president Salvador Illa condemned the violence, while Barcelona's mayor vowed punishment for the perpetrators. Police are investigating the organizers with help from French and Italian forces, as similar protests with unrest also occurred in France and Italy, where Prime Minister Meloni deployed 500 soldiers to Milan.
