France deploys thousands of police as protests spread over funding and living costs
France deployed thousands of police nationwide Saturday as Paris braced for a new march by students and workers over school funding and living costs, one week after violent unrest caused looting and property damage. The march was restricted to Paris's southeastern edge, with up to 70,000 officers deployed, along with helicopters, armored vehicles and water cannons. Major museums closed and some rallies in other cities were banned, while unions criticized the restrictions. The movement began over high school staff shortages and has expanded to demand more teachers, university places, higher wages and pensions. It comes as President Emmanuel Macron's popularity hits a low months before the presidential election.
