France Protests Escalate: Nearly 1,000 Arrested as Demonstrations Turn Violent
Nearly 1,000 people were arrested in France on Saturday as nationwide protests escalated in the evening, despite a massive deployment of 70,000 security forces. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez confirmed the arrests, warning the number would rise as data is consolidated. Around 410,000 people participated in protests across France, including 110,000 in Paris, where the demonstration initially remained peaceful before tensions erupted. Rioters attempted to break into a car dealership, while tear gas, water cannons, and fires were reported in cities including Lyon, Bordeaux, and Marseille. The Yellow Vests movement has announced new demonstrations for next week, including a "third act" on October 31. Two people were seriously injured in Clermont-Ferrand and Toulouse, though no targeted attacks on public buildings occurred.
