Barcelona: 100 Arrests After Youth Riot and Looting in City Center

n-tv.de (German) —

Around 100 people were arrested in Barcelona after hundreds of young people followed a social media call to protest, with many rioting, looting shops, and setting fire to waste containers in the city center. The violence began around 6:00 p.m. and continued into the night, with over 220 police officers deployed. About a quarter of those arrested were minors, and authorities reported damage to street furniture, bicycles, and motorcycles. Catalan President Salvador Illa condemned the violence, stating it has no place in the region, while Barcelona's mayor promised consequences for the perpetrators. Similar protests with violent incidents also occurred in French and Italian cities on Saturday.
