Évora housing protest draws 50, chants target Montenegro
Around 50 people gathered in Évora's Praça do Giraldo on Saturday evening to protest for housing rights, drawing the attention of passing tourists. Chants included "Houses to live in, not to strangle" and "Montenegro listen, your houses are for housing." The protest began at 18:15, featuring an eight-meter banner reading "Peace, Bread, Housing, Health and Education," painted by a local artistic collective. Participants also sang songs and used a megaphone before dispersing around 19:10, with plans to return next Friday at 18:00. The demonstration is part of nationwide housing protests that started in Porto on October 10 and spread to Lisbon and other cities, following parliamentary approval of a new rental law. Organizers demand measures to address the housing crisis, price controls, and taxes on extraordinary bank profits.
