France Protests: Over 1,000 Arrested as Demonstrations Turn Violent
At least 1,000 people have been arrested following protests in France, according to Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, with the number expected to rise as authorities continue to tally the results. The largely peaceful protest day was overshadowed by violence in several cities. Around 410,000 people participated in nationwide protests, including 110,000 in Paris, according to the Interior Ministry, while the CGT union reported about 800,000 attendees. Security forces were on high alert with 70,000 police and gendarmes deployed over the weekend, following severe riots on October 17. The protests, initially focused on school funding, expanded to include demonstrations against high living costs. Two people were seriously injured during clashes in Clermont-Ferrand and Toulouse. The Yellow Vests movement has announced new protests for next week, including a "third act" on October 31.
