Barcelona police arrest 100 as youth riots set fires and loot shops
Police in Barcelona arrested 100 people Saturday evening after hooded demonstrators at an anti-establishment rally looted shops and set fires in the central Plaza de Catalunya area. Catalonia's interior minister, Núria Parlon, said about 25% of those arrested were minors, with more than 30 fires set and 14 stores vandalized or looted in a tourist-heavy district. Social media posts promoted the "anti-system" protest under the slogan "Institut Indignats," echoing recent French student demonstrations. Videos showed looters breaking into shops, including department store El Corte Inglés, while Barcelona Mayor Jaume Collboni vowed the vandalism "will not go unpunished," warning of legal consequences for guardians of minors involved.
