French protests draw nearly 1,000 arrests as clashes hit Paris, Marseille, and Bordeaux
Nearly 1,000 arrests were made as hundreds of thousands protested across France on Saturday, with clashes erupting in several cities after largely peaceful demonstrations. Police used tear gas and water cannon in Paris, while barricades were set alight in Marseille and Bordeaux. Officials avoided the scale of last weekend's rioting, with 410,000 protesters estimated by the interior ministry and 70,000 police deployed. The protests over cost of living and school conditions follow last weekend's disorder that saw 2,500 arrests and hundreds of millions in damage. Similar demonstrations occurred in Tirana, Brussels, and Milan, with President Macron restricting protests to union-organized events.
