France detains about 1,000 in cost-of-living protests

dw.com (Russian) —

About 1,000 people were detained during a new wave of protests in France over the rising cost of living, according to Interior Minister Laurent Nunez. Police used water cannons and tear gas to disperse demonstrators in several cities. Nunez said initially authorized protests proceeded normally, but officers faced "high levels of violence" from radical left demonstrators in the afternoon. Clashes occurred in Paris, Marseille, Toulouse, and Nice, with over 500 people attacking police in Paris alone. The interior ministry reported 410,000 protesters nationwide, while the CGT union estimated 800,000. Authorities deployed 70,000 police officers for the demonstrations, organized by "yellow vests," unions, and students, following unrest a week earlier.
