Italy sends extra soldiers to cities as protests spread over living costs
Italy deployed hundreds of additional soldiers and tightened security across major cities on Saturday amid nationwide protests, following violent clashes between demonstrators and police in Milan last weekend. The demonstrations target rising living costs, low wages, military spending, and government policies. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's government ordered 500 extra soldiers to Milan, where unrest on 17 and 18 October caused widespread damage. Police conducted over 150 searches across multiple cities, targeting suspected participants, including students and minors. The "17 October Movement" cancelled announced protest locations, complicating security preparations. Protests are planned in Rome, Turin, Naples, and other cities, with grievances ranging from rearmament to migrant detention plans. The unrest has renewed debate over economic inequality and public order, occurring alongside similar demonstrations in France, Spain, Portugal, and Albania.
