Barcelona and Lisbon protests: 153 detained in crackdowns
Spanish police detained 128 people in Barcelona overnight Saturday for vandalism and looting of over 20 shops. Portuguese police also cleared a protest camp in Lisbon, detaining 25 people. Videos on social media show masked groups in black clothing looting stores after gathering unannounced in the Catalan city's central square. Catalan police chief Sílvia Catà condemned the "gratuitous violence," saying groups coordinated online. Among those detained were 73 minors, and 15 police officers were injured. The incidents follow widespread looting in France on October 17 during protests against rising living costs. In Lisbon, police cleared a camp of over 100 tents protesting the housing crisis, using batons. Portugal faces a severe housing shortage of 300,000 homes, according to its central bank.
