Police crackdown on Lisbon and Porto housing protests leaves 11 injured, 31 detained

rtp.pt (Portuguese) —

A police operation against housing protest camps in Lisbon and Porto resulted in 11 injuries and 31 arrests early Sunday morning. Police dismantled the encampments at Rossio Square and Dom João I Square in a coordinated action. The Public Security Police (PSP) said 31 people were detained for alleged disobedience, with 25 arrests in Lisbon and six in Porto. Police also removed and seized 171 tents. Among the injured were three police officers and eight protesters, though protest organizers claim the number of injured is much higher. The protests, which began in Porto on October 10 and spread to Lisbon and other cities, demand measures to address the housing crisis, including rent control and taxes on banks' extraordinary profits. All detainees will appear in court on Monday.
