Wang Yi on Xi's US Visit: Expanding New China-US Relations Framework

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said on Saturday that President Xi Jinping's visit to the United States achieved a key political outcome by expanding the framework of the new U.S.-China relationship with President Donald Trump, agreeing to build a "constructive and strategically stable relationship based on mutual respect, fairness, and reciprocity." Wang explained that "respect" means honoring each other's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and chosen systems, while "fairness" entails mutually beneficial cooperation and avoiding zero-sum competition. "Reciprocity" signifies equal sovereignty and balanced development of cooperation across various fields. Wang also urged the U.S. to maintain its stance against "Taiwan independence" and handle the Taiwan issue carefully, while calling for fair treatment of Chinese companies in trade matters to prevent decoupling. Notably, neither the Chinese nor U.S. statements on the summit mentioned Taiwan.
