Trump hosted Xi for a traditional Chinese tea ceremony at the White House, where both leaders maintained a friendly tone. Xi stated the meeting added "new content" to bilateral ties, which he said will follow principles of "respect, fairness, and reciprocity." Trump called the encounter "very positive" and earlier described the bilateral meeting as "very productive," though he provided no specifics. The visit follows a year of tariff warfare between the two nations, now paused, during which Beijing matched US tariff increases. State news agency Xinhua reported the leaders discussed Taiwan, drawing criticism from the Taiwanese government. Xi will not address the UN General Assembly this week, with experts suggesting he prefers direct bilateral engagement.
