Trump and Xi agree on tariffs and AI dialogue in Washington

US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping concluded their Washington summit with a deal to reduce tariffs by $30 billion and commitments to dialogue on artificial intelligence, without bridging their deep differences. The tariff reduction covers non-sensitive goods, including US agricultural and medical exports and Chinese small appliances and toys. Both leaders pledged to build a "constructive relationship of strategic stability" and agreed to meet twice more before Christmas at the APEC summit in Shenzhen and the G20 in Miami. Discussions on Iran, Taiwan, and AI yielded no substantive progress, with China only reiterating that Iran should not acquire nuclear weapons. Both sides welcomed cooperation on combating fentanyl trafficking, as China has restricted exports of two precursor chemicals.
