China and US agree on AI safety channel and military talks

China and the U.S. have agreed to establish a channel for handling AI-related incidents and accelerate military crisis communications following a three-day summit between their leaders in Washington, both sides announced Saturday. The two countries also agreed to continue operating a Board of Trade on selected bilateral issues, with the board beginning work this week. No major breakthroughs were achieved, but experts said the working groups could help prevent problems from escalating. The leaders agreed to extend a trade truce by two months, with China pledging to import at least 10 million metric tons of U.S. coal in 2027 and 2028. Both sides scheduled an AI-specific dialogue for November and agreed to meet again at the APEC summit in Shenzhen and the G20 in Florida.
