US and China create AI incident communication channel

The US and China agreed to create a bilateral communication channel to respond to artificial intelligence (AI) incidents and launch a dialogue on "superintelligence," announced by the White House on Friday after President Xi Jinping's state visit to Washington. The new mechanism will allow both nations to exchange information during AI-related security incidents, alongside a dedicated "US-China Dialogue on superintelligence" to discuss risks and benefits. The agreement also includes new trade deals, with China committing to import 10 million metric tons of US coal in 2027 and 2028. Additional accords cover tariff treatment for $30 billion in non-sensitive goods, continued work on rare earth exports, and fentanyl precursor efforts. Taiwan was not mentioned in the White House statement, and the current tariff truce was extended until January.
