China and the U.S. to set up dedicated AI incident communication channel

China and the United States will establish a dedicated communication channel to address incidents related to artificial intelligence, following the Chinese president's official visit to the U.S. The two nations also launched a bilateral dialogue on super-intelligence to exchange views on AI risks and benefits. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had proposed a notification mechanism between the countries for national security-related incidents, emphasizing a shift from opacity to transparency between the world's top two AI powers. Chinese President Xi Jinping stressed both nations' responsibility to keep AI development under human control, while President Donald Trump indicated he prefers maintaining current regulatory levels. The agreement follows a recent incident where the U.S. military nearly intercepted a Chinese ship based on an erroneous AI-generated intelligence report, which was corrected in time. Bill Gates warned that advanced AI tools could potentially cause catastrophic harm if misused by malicious actors.
