Taiwan rejects Xi's remarks to Trump as 'distortion of facts'

Taiwan's government on Friday rejected Chinese President Xi Jinping's comments to US President Donald Trump as a "distortion of facts," asserting that only Taiwanese people can decide their future. Xi had reiterated China's claim over Taiwan and urged the US to oppose Taiwan independence. Taiwan's foreign ministry stated that Xi's remarks reflect China's unilateral approach, adding that Taiwan's sovereignty belongs to its people and the Chinese Communist Party has no right to represent them. The ministry also called China the "true disruptor" of regional stability, citing military threats. The US remains Taiwan's key backer and arms supplier despite no formal diplomatic ties. Trump had paused a planned arms sale in May, calling it a bargaining chip. Taiwan pledged continued cooperation with the US and allies to safeguard Taiwan Strait stability.
