Trump demands Xi end China's support for Iran

President Donald Trump demanded that Chinese President Xi Jinping halt all military and intelligence support for Iran during Xi's state visit to the US, stating that any assistance to Tehran is "totally unacceptable." The demand follows reports that Iranian forces obtained satellite images of a Jordanian military base from Chinese sources before a July attack that killed three US troops. US Ambassador to Beijing David Perdue said Trump made the US position "very clear" and claimed there is evidence China has listened, while noting that at least 1,300 shipments of dual-use components have been sent from Beijing to Iran's defense ministry this year. China has also been the only major buyer of Iranian oil, providing an economic lifeline to the regime. Despite the tensions, Trump has been publicly warm toward Xi, hosting him at Joint Base Andrews and a state dinner, while Xi invited Trump and the first lady for another visit. The two leaders agreed to meet twice more before year's end, at the APEC summit in Shenzhen and the G20 in Miami.
