US and China to create AI incident communication channel

The United States and China will establish a bilateral communication channel to address incidents involving artificial intelligence, the White House announced Friday. The two nations agreed to create the channel during Chinese leader Xi Jinping's state visit to Washington, alongside a new "US-China Dialogue on Superintelligence" to exchange views on AI risks and benefits. Both countries face growing scrutiny over AI safety following recent incidents that raised concerns about the technology escaping creator control. Xi stated both nations have a "responsibility to develop and manage AI for the common good," while President Donald Trump said he wants to keep regulation "exactly at the current stage." Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had previously proposed a notification mechanism for national security-related AI incidents, emphasizing the importance of moving "from opacity to greater transparency" between the world's top two AI powers.
