Protests against Xi Jinping continue during White House visit with Trump

President Donald Trump warmly welcomed Chinese leader Xi Jinping with a personal airport greeting and a candlelit dinner, but protests against Xi continued almost nonstop Thursday outside the White House during his state visit. Demonstrators represented causes from religious autonomy and greater freedoms in Tibet, Hong Kong, and Xinjiang to demands to keep China out of Taiwan. Crowds gathered along Lafayette Park, chanting "Xi Jinping has got to go" and "Shame on Xi Jinping," with loudspeakers carrying their voices to the White House. Pro-China supporters also gathered, with around 200 people welcoming Xi outside his hotel. Protesters marched from the Chinese Embassy earlier in the day. Xi has faced criticism for tightening control over regions and military threats to Taiwan, which he says must come under Chinese rule.
