Kyiv's generators can't power water supply during blackouts, city says

ukranews.com (Ukrainian) —

Kyiv's city administration stated that generators cannot ensure water supply and sewage system operations in the event of a power outage. This was announced in a message from the Kyiv City State Administration, as reported by Ukrainian News. The administration noted that most of Kyiv's water supply and sewage infrastructure requires power levels that standard generators cannot handle during blackouts. To stabilize water supply during emergencies from enemy attacks, backup power systems totaling about 27 MW have been installed, including 104 generators at small and medium stations and 3 diesel-generator units with nearly 16 MW capacity at major water intake facilities. The city administration emphasized that fully powering water facilities requires building dedicated power plants, with the first phase of 16 MW already completed and the project expected to finish by the end of this year. Previously, Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported gradual water supply restoration in affected districts, following Kyivvodokanal's November 3 announcement of water outages due to damaged energy infrastructure.
