French Interior Minister Authorizes Stun Grenades for October 17 Protests
French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez has authorized police and gendarmes to use all available intermediate weapons, including stun grenades, during the October 17 protests if "urban violence" occurs. He stated this on France 2, anticipating a "fairly significant" mobilization. The authorization comes despite the suspension of one stun grenade type following an incident in Lens where a student lost his hand. Nuñez said forces must use all means at their disposal, with up to 100,000 protesters expected nationwide and 250 demonstrations planned. Authorities expect spontaneous gatherings, street protests, and blockages. Nuñez warned of "ultra-left" groups attempting to cause damage and escalate demonstrations, pledging extreme vigilance while ordering forces to frame protests and stop illegal actions.
