Trump to raise tariffs on Canadian cars and trucks starting Jan. 1

President Donald Trump announced Monday that he will impose higher tariffs on more Canadian products, including cars and trucks, starting Jan. 1. The threat follows the collapse of talks between the two countries, after which a 50% tariff on many Canadian goods took effect Saturday. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada would match those tariffs "dollar for dollar" starting Sept. 8. Trump claimed the U.S. has a $60 billion trade deficit with Canada, though the actual figure is $48 million, according to The Washington Post. He also repeated his idea of Canada becoming the 51st state, which Canadian leaders have rejected.
