Japanese Automakers Face Major Hit From Trump's Canada Tariff Hike

President Trump's planned 50 percent tariff on Canadian automobiles and auto parts is expected to significantly impact Japanese automakers with production networks across North America. The tariff rate will double on January 1, 2027. Japanese manufacturers built their North American operations based on the USMCA free trade pact, which exempts qualifying goods from tariffs. However, a review of the agreement has stalled, and worsening U.S.-Canada relations have added complications. The USMCA took effect in July 2020 during Trump's first administration. Automakers, including U.S. companies, have established vehicle plants in Canada and Mexico to supply the U.S. market.
