P.E.I. braces for impact of Canada-U.S. tariff war

Prince Edward Island Premier Rob Lantz says the province is preparing for significant economic impact as Canada imposes dollar-for-dollar counter-tariffs on $27.6 billion in U.S. goods following the breakdown of trade talks. Up to $10 million in provincial exports, including refrigeration and cooling equipment, could be affected by the escalating trade war. Potatoes and lobsters, P.E.I.'s largest exports, are currently protected under the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement. Lantz emphasized the situation could change daily and called for national unity. The premier said details on support for Island businesses will be announced in the coming days, and he encouraged Buy Canadian campaigns. Charlottetown MP Sean Casey expressed confidence in Canadians' resolve, noting the path to resolving the dispute remains unclear.
