Canada to Hit Back With Retaliatory Tariffs After US Trade Talks Collapse
Canada will announce retaliatory tariffs against the United States on Tuesday after trade negotiations collapsed, escalating a dispute that has sharply worsened relations between the two nations. Prime Minister Mark Carney indicated Ottawa may shift from matching US tariffs dollar-for-dollar to more targeted measures aimed at protecting Canadian workers and businesses. President Trump had threatened new 50 per cent tariffs on Canadian vehicles, auto parts and steel, warning of consequences "far WORSE" if Canada did not comply. Carney accused Washington of seeking to dismantle major Canadian industries, including autos, steel and aluminium, and rejected the US stance that Canada is a subsidiary. He said Canada was finding reliable partners "everywhere in the world, except in the United States. And Russia."
